Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope
The Silksworth Sports Complex lies immediately to the east of the A690 Durham to Sunderland road, approximately three miles south west of Sunderland city centre. The complex covers the former Silksworth Colliery Site, formerly a vast area of dereliction, comprising huge shape heaps, which continued to burn, disused and derelict colliery building and partially flooded areas of land. The transformation, which took place, is acknowledged to be a remarkable example of both Local Government initiative and Central government backing. The Silksworth Sports Complex has developed over the last twenty years, covering a 167 acre site.
Silksworth has three slopes, the 165 metre main slope is services by two tows and offers year round recreational skiing and snowboarding as well as tuition courses for all ages, groups and abilities. The centre has two nursery slopes available for skiing and snowboarding tuition. All teaching and coaching is carried out by City of Sunderland Qualified Instructors. Tuition is also available right throughout the summer. Look out for discounted programmes that run during the school holidays. You can hire the slope for a birthday party.
