C2C Cycle Route
The coast to coast cycle trail from Whitehaven in Cumbria to Sunderland is Britain’s most popular long distance cycle route, with nearly 15,000 cyclists completing it every year. The 140-mile ride travels along minor roads, disused railway lines, off-road tracks and specially constructed cycle paths, traditionally finishing when you dip your front wheel into the North Sea at Roker Beach.
Out of this world art which features moving images of the sun taken by NASA has now landed on the C2C route in Sunderland.
Second Sun is the first phase of a major new artwork to mark the end of the C2C cycle route in Sunderland and will greet cyclists as they reach the final leg of their journey under the Wearmouth Bridge.
Created by artist Andrew Small, Second Sun consists of an aluminium sphere supported on three legs featuring animated images of the sun taken from a solar satellite.
Those who study the artwork as they pass will see the sun rotate, while those who choose to stare directly at Second Sun will see it in 3D.
It has been accompanied by a series of waymarkers which have been placed along the final mile of the C2C, one of the UK’s most popular cycle routes. Each waymarker features images of planets in the solar system, sited at relative distances from the Sun with a countdown to the end of the route. For more information click here.
